Small Craft Group

The Small Craft Group was formed in 1985 to investigate the needs of the small craft and yacht navigator. Amongst the Group´s aims are the encouragement of better understanding of modern electronic navigation systems and the assurance that small craft navigators' interests are recognized by those responsible for aids to navigation. It has representation on committees of Trinity House and the Hydrographic Office, is recognized by the European Harbour Masters Association and maintains close links with the DfT, MCA and RYA.

The Group provides a forum for those who are interested in the navigation of small vessels at sea. Here one may meet and correspond with people of similar interests. The members range from professional navigators with both the R.A.F. and R.N. as well as the merchant marine, technical personnel from Trinity House, to yachtsmen and yachtswomen. The one thing all Group members have in common is a desire to navigate efficiently and safely onboard small craft.

The Group runs two meetings a year, Spring and Autumn, in London with expert speakers on topics chosen by the Committee, but of interest to all amateur seafarers. In addition, members receive the twice yearly newsletter Fairway.

One of the great benefits of belonging to the Small Craft Group is the ability to attend the meetings are arranged jointly by the Institute with the Nautical Institute and the Honourable Company of Master Mariners. These are mostly held on board Headquarters Ship Wellington, moored off the Embankment opposite Temple Station in London. Although aimed at professional mariners, these are normally of interest to small craft users, and yachtsmen are made welcome and their views listened to. This is where you will meet those mariners and professional navigation experts who serve on the Committees that make the decisions that affect us all.
